Why does Simon Cowell always wear red glasses?
Simon Cowell said he wears red glasses to “filter” out the laser-like beams and prevent unbearable headaches.
He suffers with migraine likely caused by photophobia – sensitivity to light – after spending long hours under bright filming lights.
Research shows some people with photophobia may benefit from migraine glasses, which can cost as little as £20.
A study, published in the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, showed “lenses outfitted with a thin-film optical notch filter may be useful in treating chronic migraine”.
However the NHS does not suggest wearing them as a potential aid.
Rob Music, chief executive of The Migraine Trust said: “At the moment, there is not enough high-quality scientific evidence for us to know whether these glasses help people with migraines or not, so we cannot recommend them.”
Prof Peter Goadsby, of King’s College London, tells Sun Health: “Some of those with migraines do find relief with tints.
“There is some limited science to this.
“Altogether, it’s fair to say it’s not very well understood.
“That said, light sensitivity is very common in migraines.”
More than 5.6million people in England suffer migraines, with around 190,000 attacks experienced every day.
There are many triggers when suffering from migraines, such as stress, alcohol, loud noise and smell.
Taking medication can make a difference when suffering from them.
In April 2024, the NHS released a new pill, which is set to benefit around 170,000 Brits.

What has Simon Cowell said about his glasses?
He told The Sun: “The red glasses are because I have lights in my eyes all day long.
“It’s like a laser and I get migraines and that’s like a filter.
“And they actually do work.”
Asked if he might set a trend with the eyewear, he said: “I don’t think anyone has ever copied my fashion.”
Simon shared with his Instagram followers in February 2024: “I just found out, according to the internet, I have a ‘mystery illness’.
“For anyone concerned, I missed two auditions at the end of one day, two weeks ago, because I do get migraines after long days in the filming lights.
“Next week we are filming BGT in Manchester – I look forward to seeing you then.
“PS. This is why I wear these glasses!”

During the promotion of the Britain’s Got Talent 2025, he was seen sporting the same look again.
Although Simon seems to occasionally switch to black sunglasses during his red carpet appearances.
