Will Kaizer Chiefs thin and depleted backline survive against the league champions Mamelodi Sundowns? Let’s delve in and find out.
Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi finds himself in a defensive dilemma ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes Nedbank Cup semi-final against Sundowns. Injuries threaten to side line both of his key centre-backs, casting serious doubt over the club’s chances of stopping their in-form rivals.
Inacio Miguel suffered an injury blow during Chiefs’ recent Betway Premiership clash against TS Galaxy at Peter Mokaba Stadium. The Angolan defender slipped and fell while Chiefs held a 1-0 lead, forcing an 80th-minute substitution. Edmilson Dove stepped in to replace him—but moments later, Chiefs conceded a late equalizer through Mlungisi Mbunjana.
Dortley still out, Miguel doubtful for Sunday
Rushwin Dortley remains out of action, and all signs suggest he won’t recover in time for the semi-final. His last appearance came in Chiefs’ narrow 1-0 defeat to Sundowns last month at Lucas Moripe Stadium. That game marked Dove’s return to the starting XI, covering at left-back as Bradley Cross continued his inconsistent run.
With Dortley sidelined and Miguel’s status uncertain, Chiefs may be forced to rely solely on Edmilson Dove and Given Msimango to hold down the central defense. It’s a risky proposition against a Sundowns team known for relentless attacking play.
Nabi stays hopeful despite defensive setbacks
Speaking on Miguel’s injury, Nabi stated:
“About Miguel, we will wait to see if he is doing to get the thought of medical staff to see he will be there for the next game.”
Despite missing key players and enduring a four-match winless streak in the league, Nabi continues to aim high. Chiefs currently cling to a top-eight league spot, but the coach remains focused on a bigger prize: a top-four finish and a return to CAF competitions.
“Regarding finishing in the top three, we are focusing on taking each game as it comes,” said Nabi. “To be honest, it will be very difficult because we have dropped points that we shouldn’t have. However, we will approach each game individually and see where we end up in the league.”
Can Chiefs survive the Sundowns storm?
Sunday’s clash is more than just a semi-final, it’s a test of depth, resilience, and strategy. With defensive options dwindling, Nabi must rally his squad for what could be their toughest challenge yet this season. If Chiefs can overcome the odds, the victory could mark a turning point in a campaign that has struggled to gain momentum.
